Before you start Ozempic: the questions to ask your doctor

The best decision doesn't start with a yes or a no. It starts with good questions.

The question I get most is "Doctor, should I take Ozempic?" But there's a better one that comes first: how do I decide well? Because a good decision doesn't start with a yes or a no — it starts with good questions. Whatever you land on in the end, walking into the appointment with these makes you a partner in your own care, not a passenger.

(First: this is general education, not medical advice, and nothing that follows is a recommendation to start, stop, or change any medication. Decisions about GLP-1 drugs — Ozempic, Wegovy, and the rest — are strictly between you and your own doctor.)

"Is this the right tool for my situation?"

Not every goal or every biology points to the same answer. Ask plainly what we're trying to fix: blood sugar? weight? a specific metabolic condition? Then: is a GLP-1 the best fit for that, or is it one option among several? A tool matched to the goal beats a tool that's simply popular.

"What's the plan to protect my muscle?"

Rapid weight loss can carry lean mass out with it, and muscle is the organ of longevity. Before day one, I'd want a plan: enough protein, resistance training, and some way to check that what I'm losing is fat — not the muscle I'll need to age strong. If no one brings up muscle, bring it up yourself.

"How will we measure success — beyond the scale?"

The scale is a single number, and a noisy one. Ask how you'll track what actually matters: energy, whatever labs your doctor chooses, how your clothes fit, strength, sleep. A number falling on a bad plan isn't a win — it's a bill that arrives later.

"What are the side effects, and how will we handle them?"

Every real medicine has trade-offs. Ask what's common, what's a red flag that means "call me," and how the dose will be adjusted over time. Knowing this in advance turns a frightening surprise into a managed step.

"What's the exit plan — from day one?"

This is the question almost no one asks and everyone should: if I ever come off this, what keeps the results? Because the habits you build while the food noise is quiet are exactly the ones that remain when the medication is gone. That quiet window is the opportunity, not the destination. Start building now.

"What am I doing for the root, not just the symptom?"

A GLP-1 can quiet the noise; it doesn't teach your body new habits or undo what drove the dysfunction in the first place. The medication and the root-cause work aren't rivals — the best outcomes I see pair them. Ask how the drug fits inside a bigger plan of real food, movement, sleep, and support.

The spirit of the conversation

None of this is anti-medication, or pro. It's pro-you-deciding-well. Bring the questions, drop the shame, and treat the choice as what it is: the stewardship of a body that is a gift. That's Amor Consciente — honest medicine, whole-person care, and a decision you make with your doctor, never alone and never from shame.

(General education, not medical advice. GLP-1 medications, blood-sugar control, and any changes to your treatment are decisions between you and your physician — especially if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar. Never start, stop, or change a medication without your doctor.)
