The broken-metabolism myth: why you're not broken (and what's really going on)

"Broken" shuts the door and drains the will to try. "Adapted" leaves it open. And the signals your body adapted to can be changed.

"I think my metabolism is damaged." I hear it almost every week, almost always in a lowered voice, like a confession. The person has tried everything, the weight no longer moves like it used to, and they reach the most logical and most discouraging conclusion: something inside me broke. As a doctor, let me tell you something gently and firmly: your metabolism is almost never "damaged." That idea is one of the most common and most paralyzing myths there is, because it turns a problem you can solve into a sentence you can't touch. Let's look at what's really going on.

Your metabolism is not a broken machine

When we say "metabolism," we picture an engine with a dial: fast or slow, and if it "breaks," it stays slow forever. But your metabolism isn't a fixed machine; it's a living system that adapts to what you ask of it. It responds to how much muscle you carry, how much you sleep, how much stress you bear, what and when you eat, how much you move. "Adapting" is not the same as "breaking." A broken machine doesn't start working on its own; a system that adapted can adapt again —in the other direction— when you change what you give it.

What's really going on

Behind almost every "damaged metabolism" is one or more of these, and none of them is a sentence:

Insulin resistance. It's the silent lead. For years, excess sugar and ultra-processed food keeps insulin high; cells stop "listening," and the body stores energy more easily than it releases it. It's not a broken engine; it's stiffened locks that can open again.

Muscle loss. Muscle is a big part of your engine at rest. Over the years, with extreme diets and a sedentary life, muscle is lost without our noticing —and with it, the capacity to spend energy. It's not that the metabolism broke: the engine got smaller. The good news: it can be rebuilt at any age.

The rebound of extreme diets. When you eat very little for a long time, the body does the smart thing to survive: it lowers its output. This is called adaptation, and it's real. But it's a temporary response to a scarcity signal, not a permanent defect. Change the signal —eat enough protein, train, rest— and the response changes.

Sleep and stress. Sleeping poorly and living in chronic stress raise hormones that push hunger and storage. It isn't "slow metabolism"; it's a body in alarm mode. And the alarm can be switched off.

Why "it's damaged" is a lie that stops you

The words you use to explain your body decide what you attempt. If you believe you're broken, you stop trying —why bother, if it can't be fixed? That's the real harm of the myth: it isn't physiological, it's that it takes away your agency. Insulin resistance, muscle, sleep, stress: all of it responds to what you do. "Broken" shuts the door. "Adapted" leaves it open.

How to switch your metabolism back on

Not with a trick or a product, but with the boring things that work:

  • Lower the sugar load (Zero Sugar as a direction, not a punishment) to bring down the insulin that keeps the locks shut.
  • Prioritize protein at every meal, to protect and rebuild muscle.
  • Lift something heavy a few times a week: rebuilding the engine is one of the highest-return things there is.
  • Sleep and lower stress, because no diet beats a body in alarm.
  • Be patient. What took years to adapt takes months to reverse, not days. Measure in seasons, not mornings.

You are not broken

This is where Amor Consciente comes in: stop fighting your body as if it were a defective enemy, and start collaborating with it as the intelligent system it is. You are not damaged. You are adapted to years of signals, and the signals can be changed. That isn't a sentence; it's one of the most hopeful things a doctor can tell you.

(General education, not medical advice. Insulin resistance and weight have many causes; if you have a health condition, take medication, or live with diabetes, don't change your food, your exercise, or your medicines on your own: do it alongside your doctor.)
