How to eat well on Ozempic: making every bite count when appetite drops

The medication lowers your appetite. Your job is to make the little you eat count.

If a GLP-1 reduces your appetite, every bite matters. The goal is not to eat as little as possible: it is to meet your needs with foods you can tolerate. This educational guide outlines priorities to discuss with your doctor or dietitian and adapt to your situation.

(First: this is general education, not medical or nutrition advice. Your dose, your plan, and any questions about your diet are between you and your doctor or dietitian — especially if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar.)

Protein first, every time you do eat

Weight loss can include muscle loss. Include protein and strength training adapted to you; protein alone is not enough. Individualize amounts with your professional. Four-society advisory, 2025.

Fiber and fluids (the two most missed)

Constipation can occur during treatment; vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to dehydration. Official Ozempic information, section 5.6.

Add fiber gradually as tolerated and agree on hydration with your team, especially if you have a fluid restriction. NIDDK: fiber and fluids.

Don't under-eat into a hole

Eating almost nothing is not a goal. If you cannot cover the basics, bring a record of your food intake and symptoms to your appointment. The next step is to review the plan with your team, without adjusting your own dose or automatically turning to supplements.

Nutrient density over volume

When the quantity is small, the quality has to rise. Choose foods that give a lot per bite: eggs, fish, yogurt, legumes, colorful vegetables, olive oil, fruit. Spend your limited appetite on food that still looks like it came from the earth — not on ultra-processed calories that crowd nutrients out.

Work with the nausea, not against it

If eating feels hard: smaller, more frequent bites; stop at the first sign of fullness (it arrives fast now); and go easy on very fatty, fried, or very sweet foods that can worsen nausea. Simple, gentle, protein-forward meals tend to sit best.

The window is the point

Habits still matter, but they do not guarantee weight maintenance after stopping treatment. Continuing or stopping is a decision for you and your doctor. STEP 1 trial extension. Amor Consciente also means asking for follow-up when you need it.

(General education, not medical or nutrition advice. Work with your doctor or dietitian; all the more so if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar. If you can't eat or have severe symptoms, tell your doctor. Never start, stop, or change a medication without them.)
