The biomarkers that really matter in a check-up

Measuring for its own sake isn't prevention. These are the markers that carry real signal about your future health.

This article is educational and does not replace medical consultation. Always interpret your results with a professional.

"What tests should I order?" is one of the most frequent questions I receive. The short answer: fewer than you think, but better chosen.

Metabolism: the foundation

  • Fasting glucose and HbA1c to assess blood sugar control over time.
  • Advanced lipid panel, ideally including ApoB, a finer predictor of cardiovascular risk than total cholesterol.

Inflammation

  • High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP), a marker of low-grade inflammation linked to multiple chronic diseases.

Organ function

  • Kidney and liver function to catch silent problems early.
  • Vitamin D and thyroid panel, frequently off and easy to correct.

Body composition

Beyond weight, the ratio of muscle mass to visceral fat says far more about your metabolic health than the number on the scale.

The mistake of measuring without acting

A panel of biomarkers is worthless if it ends up in a drawer. Its value lies in turning each number into a decision: adjust diet, training, sleep or, when appropriate, treatment. Prevention isn't measuring — it's acting on what you measure.
